Project 2026 Edition
Pier-Bridge of Kanyaka Island
A project supported by: Maputo Port Development Company
Completion date: 2026
Total budget: USD 14 million
Main Agenda 2030 by AIVP Commitment: Goal 3 – Sustainable Mobility
To sum up
The Kanyaka jetty bridge is a flagship investment within the “port-city” strategy of the Port of Maputo, which aims to ensure that the port’s growth translates into tangible and lasting benefits for neighbouring communities. By supporting this essential public infrastructure, MPDC has extended its action beyond the boundaries of the port, to the island of Kanyaka, located 40 km away, thereby strengthening the link between maritime activity, urban development and the daily lives of the island’s residents.
For generations, access to the island was limited by the absence of safe and suitable infrastructure for the embarkation and disembarkation of passengers and goods. Travel was particularly difficult for children, the elderly, people with reduced mobility and passengers carrying provisions. The new jetty bridge has radically changed this reality, providing a safer, more dignified and more reliable link between the island and Maputo.
This improved link facilitates the movement of residents, tourists and traders, the delivery of essential goods and the intervention of emergency services, while creating new prospects for tourism, local trade and employment. It also strengthens access to education, healthcare and other services available on the mainland. The Kanyaka jetty bridge represents much more than a mere physical infrastructure: it is a bridge to opportunity, inclusion and development, illustrating how a port’s commitment to its territory can help build a more connected, more accessible and more resilient city.
