To sum up

The ‘Green Alat’ project, supported by the Port of Baku, is taking place against a backdrop of strong industrial growth in the city of Alat, at a time when a third of the population is under 18. The project is part of the Port of Baku’s 2035 carbon neutrality strategy. In particular, it aims to strengthen relations between the port and the community of Alat by offering recreational areas, educational opportunities and environmental benefits. The project submitted as part of the AIVP Prize Antoine Rufenacht includes:

1/ The creation of an EcoPark, a high-quality public space for the community offering a recreational area that helps to improve the living environment of the local population and contributes to environmental education.

2/ The launch of the RoboPort STEM Lab, which focuses on empowering young girls by offering training in Artificial Intelligence, software development and port engineering. This initiative promotes gender diversity and prepares participants for future careers in the maritime industry.

3/ The development of actions to protect biodiversity: in collaboration with the WWF, the Port of Baku is committed to safeguarding more than 40 species of birds by promoting nesting, food supply and the creation of ecological habitats. On Gill Island, the port has contributed to the modernisation of the wastewater treatment plant and the introduction of a sturgeon conservation and tree-planting programme.

Outstanding features:

• The project promote sustainable development within the community
• Developing recreational and sports facilities
• Developing a new training offer geared towards the port careers of tomorrow. Since its creation, the laboratory has trained 35 young people and plans to extend its scope to offer as many opportunities as possible to female students
• Implementation of a strategy to preserve biodiversity
• The participation of the local community was crucial to the success of the project. Extensive consultation ensured that initiatives met the needs and priorities of the community. Residents were actively involved in the development of the EcoPark and the RoboPort STEM laboratory
