Port-city integration: developing sustainable mobility in the Port of Vigo
A project supported by: Port Authority of Vigo
Completion date: 2023
To sum up
Motivated by the aim to improve the port-city integration and supported by the Port of Vigo’s Blue
Growth Plan, the project combines the redevelopment of existing areas and the creation of new infrastructures in order to:
- Strengthen connections between the city and the port,
- Improve accessibility and sustainable mobility,
- Enhance the environmental, historical and cultural heritage of the port of Vigo.
The proposal identifies two key elements to achieve these purposes:
- Construction of a pedestrian-cycle path to improve accessibility and sustainable mobility along 3 km of the port front. The work is articulated in three consecutive and connected interventions in the areas of “As Avenidas”, “Berbes” and “Orillamar”. In these areas, repair work has been carried out, changing surfaces, rearranging the port space, reducing visual barriers and building platforms for pedestrians and cyclists in previously untravelled areas.
- Creation of an underwater observatory, the Nautilus, installed at the heart of the port to pursues scientific, recreational, educational and public awareness objectives. This unique infrastructure provides a real-time observation point for marine biodiversity. Covering an area of 300 square metres, the Nautilus comprises three piers and two access ramps located at the street level. Near the observatory, 330 m2 of nature-inclusive design panels recreating natural habitats have been installed.
The Port of Vigo’s Blue Growth Plan aims to promote investment and innovation in all areas of activity related to the blue economy. Implemented in 2016, it has established a model for dialogue and collaboration between the port and the city, with the participation of more than 300 stakeholders from the port community representing the academic, public, private and civil society sectors.
